Rankings: Health care costs, hotels, car insurance costs
Delaware Business Now receives rankings listing Delaware on a near daily basis. Here are a few from our In Box.
The most recent U.S. News & World Report “Best States Rankings” continued to show positive news with Delaware ranking near the top in hospital quality.
Delaware was ranked second in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report.
“Delaware hospitals are dedicated to providing the highest quality care for each and every Delawarean, and it shows,” said Wayne A. Smith, CEO of the Delaware Healthcare Association. “Quality health care delivery is always first and foremost for Delaware’s hospitals and health care delivery systems. They invest in, practice, and assess for quality. Quality improvement is a never-ending mission, and we are incredibly proud of Delaware’s hospitals and the recognition of their efforts to ensure quality patient care, from which every Delawarean benefits.”
Delaware achieved high marks compared to other states in the following categories:
The ranking was based on treating nine procedures and conditions: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, congestive heart failure, heart bypass surgery, hip replacement, knee replacement and lung cancer surgery
State eight highest in health care costs
Cost is an issue when it comes to hospitals and healthcare in general.
Forbes Advisor analyzed 11 key metrics using data from the Kaiser Family Foundation and found that Delaware ranks No. 8 among the most expensive states for health care.
The ranking comes as no surprise, givern the state’s history of high heath care costs.
Factors that have been mentioned include a lack of competition among healthcare providers to a high incidence of chronic diseases.
South Dakota topped the list of states with the most expensive health care, while Michigan is the cheapest.

Delaware insurance rates come with a high cost per mile
It’s no secret that Delaware has among the highest vehicle insurance races, even beating New Jersey, which had among the highest rates in the nation until reforms were made to the system.
This ranking from Finance Buzz is a little different from other auto insurance rankings, since it calculates the cost per mile of insurance.
Delaware is basically tied with California and Louisiana, with the cost of insurance amounting to 16 cents a mile. The lowest rate is in Wyoming, with drivers in the state with a lot of wide open spaces piling up a lot of vehicle miles a year, but paying only six cents a mile for coverage.

Hotels a driver of the state’s economy
Hotels in Delaware are a bigger part of the economy than many of us realize.
That was one of the interesting things to come out of a recent report.
HotelTechReport analyzed industry data for each US state, finding that Hawaii hotel businesses make the most revenue overall, with each business raking in $25,811,058 on average per year.
Hotels in Hawaii, on average, are larger and generate more revenue per establishment than in any other state.
The average revenue per hotel was not available for Delaware and a couple of other states.
The ratio of hotels to total businesses in Delaware is higher than in many tourism-oriented states, such as Florida, Delaware came close to hotel-laden Washington, DC, in the percentage of hotels to total businesses.
Total hotel employment in the state is a shade over 4,000.
